We define emotional intelligence as the ability to realize your senses and feelings, express, manage and use them to build interpersonal relations with others on the basis of this skill.

What is emotional intelligence?

Definition of Emotional Intelligence or EQ is relatively new, and the interest to it is growing with every day. And it is not a coincidence: numerous studies showed the level of personal human achievements to a great extent are determined not with the classical index of cleverness IQ but with sensitive abilities. In other words, “being smart” doesn’t mean being successful, it is important to seize your expressions and to be able to control it.


The idea of “emotional intelligence” appeared back in 1990 with the filing of US researchers Peter Salovey & Jack Mayer. In this concept, they have combined a group of mental abilities that help to recognize and identify individual reactions and the emotions of others. Active research started in 1995 after the publishing of the D Holman’s book “Emotional Intelligence”. In this book, the author has defined emotional intelligence as the way and the method human treats oneself and others.

According to the description, proposed by Mayer and Salovey, there are four components of emotional intelligence:

1. Accurately express and evaluate emotions.

It is significant to understand your emotions and the feelings of others, related to both internal and external events. This capability helps to transfer emotions into thoughts, physical condition, appearance or behavior. It is a skill to accurately express your feelings and needs related to it.

2. Use emotions during mental activity.

How and what we think depends on how we feel. Emotions affect the thought process and prepare us for certain actions. This ability helps us to understand how to use emotions and think commendably. An individual can see the world from different angles and solve problems more efficiently when controlling his emotions.

3. Understand reactions

It means an individual knows how to:

– identify the source of emotions, and categorize them,

– recognize the connection between emotions and words,

– interpret the meaning of emotions;

– understand complicated feelings;

– distinguish transitions between emotions and the further development of emotion.

4. Manage emotions

As we said before, feelings affect thinking. So take them into account when solving problems, improving critical thinking and choosing the style of behavior. The skill to cope with your own and others’ emotions allows to evoke emotions or suspend them exactly when you need it.

Apparently, there is no commonly accepted method for the assessment of emotional intelligence. The simplest way is an external evaluation of the success of the person. For the subjective evaluation, you can use the scale of emotions. Ie, low self-esteem, guilt and depression talks of low EQ. Such person is not happy with himself and thinks he achieved nothing.

When an individual understands parts of his hidden motives, learns how to manage his condition and time while motivating himself, it points out the development of emotional intellect. An index of high emotional awareness is personal harmony when an individual stops rely on the command of his emotions, and success becomes a logical consequence of human actions. It is supposed the development of emotional intelligence increases the human efficiency in numerous social areas and accompanies the ability to feel happy.

How to develop emotional intelligence

In the meantime, psychologists disagree around the possibility of the development of emotional intelligence. Some experts state the EQ – is a relatively stable capacity, and it is impossible to “grow” it. But training should help to improve the emotional competence.

Other experts (specifically Daniel Goleman) believe that emotional intelligence can be developed. As an argument, they reference to the fact that the neural pathways of the brain change until the mid-life.

The improvement of emotional intelligence is the development of self-awareness, the skills to cope with your own and others’ emotions and to interact with people effectively.

The first step in the expansion of EQ – is to create the ability to understand and evaluate your emotions from a particular point of view. For it ask yourself from time to time: “What do I feel now?”, starting from basic conditions (happiness, fear, anger management).

Afterward, learn how to recognize the source of emotions and a grade of their intensity. Rate emotions on a scale from 1 to 10: from the minimal power, when it is easy to manage it, to very high when the emotion is uncontrolled. This range allows to recognize and assess nuances of your sensations. It will help to reduce the attitude to this emotion to the optimal level.

Next phase – an extension of the variety of emotions. Create the alphabet of your feelings, try to assess the emotional state of others.

Understand and realize, what is going on with you when you act in one way or another. Learn to talk about your emotions, transfer feelings and emotions into words. Indeed, many relationships break from of understatement and misinterpretation.
