Style – is the central element of the writing. In fact, it is a cloth of the text, its design, and as we know people’s clothes say a lot about them. A man in a formal suit is a business worker for sure while a guy in a tracksuit and sneakers either is going to the grocery or is working out.

writing style

In this way by the stylistic “outfit” of the text you can understand where it functions. Speaking scientifically about types of writing – it is a system of different linguistic means and ways in which they are organized, developed during the entire historical period of language development.

The use of each of the existing writing techniques is characteristic of a strictly defined sphere of human communication: for example, the scientific area, official business, the scope of activity of mass media, literature or the scope of communication at home or online.

The four writing styles are expository, persuasive, descriptive and narrative. Here are their types and examples:

  1. Expository

Also known as an informative explanation, this style of writing is to explain or inform. This technique attempts to
focus on telling about a given topic without voicing the opinion of the writer.

The author strives to make a subjective reflection without personal opinion or offers a depiction from a particular point of view.

When to use Expository writing:

  • Textbooks;
  • How-to articles, how to do something;
  • Research papers and encyclopedias;
  • News stories without editorial opinion;
  • Instruction manuals.
  1. Persuasive

Also called argumentative writing, the primary purpose of persuasive style is to convince a reader of a particular idea or view on an issue. Unlike expository explanation, it includes the opinion and tilt of the author.

This style sets focus on arguments with the support of reasons and justifications. A persuasive explanation merely includes other persons’ opinion without adding author’s narration. For instance, it is common for advertisements, letters of complaint and cover letters.

When to Use Persuasive Writing:

  • Editorials
  • Speeches;
  • Business ideas;
  • Letters of complaint;
  • Critiques and reviews.
  1. Descriptive

This style of writing attempts to communicate the details of a particular action, event, person, place or object. It is focused on describing objects in the romantic, detailed and personal way. Still, it allows the reader to see, sense and feel everything through the eyes of the writer.
Hint: To differentiate expository and descriptive writing styles, decide whether it is more personal or distant. Descriptive description of a phone will use adjectives, comparisons with unexpected forms and materials – it is as thin as a leave of the maple, – and other poetic references.

When to use descriptive narration:

  • Poetry;
  • Diary or journal writing;
  • Parts of long stories;
  • Nature writing.
  1. Narrative

The main purpose of narrative writing is to tell a story complete with characters, actions, plot, setting, and dialogue. Generally, the author creates different characters and tells a story about them. Usually, it is a fictional tale, but it also can be non-fictional if delivered in a right way.

In such kind of narration, the story is principal, not the facts. A common form of this style of writing is when the writer tells a story from one of the characters.

When to use narrative style of writing:

  • Novels and poetry;
  • Screen scripts;
  • Plays and stories;
  • Legends;
  • Biographies or autobiographies.
